Sailing activities commenced at Daneshill in 1973. This Club was formed in 1988 to provide for the continuation and development of outdoor activities for schools in the Retford area. Sailing now takes place on a lake which was excavated as part of the amenities development of the nature reserve on Daneshill Road near Torworth.
The club has always promoted sailing as a social activity with emphasis on introducing people, particularly children, into sailing dinghies as an active sporting pastime. In order to teach sailing more effectively the club became affiliated to the RYA.
Contact with the local schools has been maintained throughout the club’s history with regular school sailing activities on Wednesdays and an annual regatta where the schools compete for trophies. The club is involved with St. Giles Special School, introducing water sports activities to children with special needs.
Sailing takes place most Sundays during the season with club members sailing an assortment of dinghies and who are always prepared to ‘lend’ their boats to other members in order to experience sailing different boats. The club has a fleet of eight Toppers and five GP14 dinghies used for training purposes and two Laser II’s for the use of the more experienced Club members. We also have three Pico’s and two Laser Bugs to extend the range of boats available for the development of Junior Sailing.
