We’ll be hosting our annual open day on Sunday 18th May 11:00-16:00, with instructors available to help you take to the water and try sailing for free, whatever your age or ability!

As the summer rapidly approaches and we all start thinking about how to spend our weekends Daneshill Sailing Club are again opening their doors and inviting anyone who has ever thought about getting in a boat to come along and have a go as part of a Royal Yachting Association “Discover Sailing” event

Daneshill Sailing Club invites you and your family to enjoy a free sailing experience on Sunday 18th May 2025 as the club again hosts anyone-welcome taster sessions. Starting at 11.00 am until 16.00 pm the club members and Instructors are available to take you out on the water to experience dinghy sailing at first hand. We would recommend bringing a change of clothes just in case, as it is possible you may get a little wet. Booking is not necessary but you may need to wait if it is busy but there is plenty to see and do on the bank.

The club is a RYA Recognised Training Centre and provides sailing courses for both junior and adult members with qualified Instructor tuition during the summer, the first 4 day course being for junior sailors over the weekends of 26th/27th July and 2nd/3rd August.

The club is situated within Daneshill Lakes Nature Reserve, near Retford, between Torworth and Lound. The club sails on the main lake, and although sailing activities began at Daneshill in 1973, the sailing club as it now exists was formed in 1988 to provide the development of outdoor activities for schools in the Retford area. The lake was originally excavated as part of the amenity development of the nature reserve in the eighties and now has a number of scenic walks and picnic friendly areas all within easy reach of the lakeside. The site is owned by Nottinghamshire County Council and managed on their behalf by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust who have made great efforts to improve the site in recent years. The number of visitors to the Nature Reserves continues to increase especially as it is very close to the Idle Valley Centre which caters for all manner of wildlife enthusiasts.

If you like the idea of a fun hobby in the fresh air in a family orientated club then come along and give it a go, you might find you are hooked. The club has always promoted sailing as a social activity, with emphasis on introducing people of all ages and particularly children into sailing dinghies as an active sporting pastime. Sailing takes place most Sundays during the season, which runs from 1st March to the 31st October. Club members sail an assortment of dinghies and are always happy to take potential sailors out on the water. The club has a fleet of boats, and all necessary safety gear, weather its your first time on the water or a seasoned professional.
